Shhh... The Secret to Perfect High-Fives Revealed

Close friends know I prefer the ‘fist-bump’ over high-fives. How often has a single, sloppy high-five left you embarrassed and feeling lame? Fist-bumps are cool, timely, and easy to execute flawlessly.

Now, I fear the high-five no more: with the “Thespian Method” of High Fives, you can always land a solid.

The secret? Both you & your partner should focus your eyes on each-other’s elbows while executing the high-five. Try it, you’ll never miss.

Thanks to Adam for divulging this secret to me. Happy high-fiving, people!

My new theme: It’s about time!
Designed and built by web mavericks Matt & Jace under the umbrella venture JPTB. Definitely check out their original themes as well.
For those who are interested, the entries align to the time posted, and each day of the week gets its own bold color. Check out a post from Monday, if you can.

This should be considered scientific law by now. We saw a lot of this Dickwad theory in action during the early days of http://icantdeci.de/

Am I a Psychotechnologist Now?

My daily concerns at our soon-to-be-not-so-secret startup are split between a few activities. Of course, I worry about bugs, scalability, new features, etc. Technology!

Increasingly, I worry about our community & the quality of participation. I fret over the social signals our design sends out. I think about the differences in user demographics of those acquired through different channels. I ponder how to herd, cajole, entice, inspire, and entertain our audience into returning again, and again.

Can I propose a new college major for considerations by the power that be?

Psychotechnology.

It’s a cross-discipline major combining Computer Science, Psychology, and (social) Design.

I’d be happy to proof-read a free copy of the intro book…. as soon as it exists.

The Universe is far too Small

It’s a busy weekend, with a lot of events. So, I reserved a small stretch of this Saturday’s afternoon for errands, which included a haircut. I called at 3:45 to schedule an appointment, they told me to show up at 4. When I showed up, I was  asked to wait a ‘bit’ which turned into 20 minutes.

Generally speaking (feel free to disagree in the comments) I’m a nice guy, so it was very out of character for me when I decided to call the receptionist out on this ‘error’ (catching her in a lie as well). I decided to hold off really digging in, because I was reluctant to be mean and I still needed a haircut.

OF COURSE, when I was finally ‘under the clippers’ and talking away, the receptionist jumps into the conversation, when she heard I’d be celebrating a friends birthday party at the same club she and her friends will be at tonight.

The moral of the afternoon: you just can’t afford to be angry at people. They’ll always show up again. Today, though, I had wished that wasn’t the case.

My blog’s unifying theme is stuff I find interesting. Usually that means technology, or psychology, or all too frequently myself, but it turns out I’m also interested in goofy russian zombie b-movie-esque propaganda-ish music videos. Who knew!
